Farewell, Ye Olde Hunting Garage

The old hunting garage is no more; the demolition of the derelict building complex is currently underway. By the end of July, an open construction site of around 1,700 square meters will be available for the new flagship building of the 10th district.

The demolition requires some pretty heavy equipment. Seventy-five truckloads of construction rubble weighing a total of almost 2,000 tons will have been transported away by the time work is complete. Almost 90 percent of the demolished material is being recycled, and 100 percent of the brick and concrete. The bricks can be used, for example, to make brick gravel for tennis courts, and is also used in landscaping and as an aggregate for the production of new bricks. The concrete is pulverized into concrete granulate that can be used to make new concrete, gravel farm roads, or train tracks.

The Blend - Coming Soon!

After a long and intensive planning phase, we are very happy to see visible signs that things are finally getting started. We really enjoyed the farewell party prior to demolition with special guest District Chairman Marcus Franz and everyone else involved in the project. Farewell, old hunting garage!

So what's next?

After demolition is finished, there will be a short summer break, and construction work will start in the fall. Total construction time for a project of this size is around two years, so we are looking at finishing up in 2023. Construction work will be sweetened by the International Building Exhibition (IBA), to be held in Vienna in 2022. The Blend has been nominated as an award candidate, and we look forward to the extra attention this acknowledgement will bring to our project.

About The Blend

The Blend” gets its name from the delicious “G’mischten Satz” blended wine that will be tasted here at the future ground floor restaurant. The name is also an allusion to the highly diverse uses of the building, which are designed to connect the building’s users and to include the neighbors and surrounding community.

The Blend will be an inviting building with an intermingling of rental apartments, offices, communal areas (such as a shared rooftop terrace for communal gardening), a kindergarten, an event area with a bar and lounge, show kitchen, and a warehouse shop for regional delicacies, together ensuring liveliness and local availability for all shoppers. And beyond the use concept, this will also be a highly sustainable building, right down to the excellent public transportation access. Numerous building measures aim to achieve ÖGNI certification and a climate-active declaration. In addition, the power supply of this architecturally appealing building with greened microclimates will be entirely free of fossil fuels.
